Miami City Ballet Presents Alexei Ratmansky’s Symphonic Dances and the Great Balanchine’s Works

News | January 29, 2013

On February 5th, South Florida ballet lovers will have the pleasure of experiencing the artistic brilliance of American Ballet Theater’s Artist in Residence, Alexei Ratmansky. As one of the most internationally sought after choreographers, Ratmansky will be bringing to the South Florida stage his innovative and dramatic set, Symphonic Dances. Following its one-night-only world premiere performance last year, Symphonic Dances will begin its repertory season via Miami City Ballet’s Program III.

As a seasoned and elite Russian performer and choreographer, Alexei Ratmansky is celebrated worldwide in the ballet industry. The New Yorker even described him as “the man who is remaking ballet.” Before becoming the award winning choreographer he is today, he has also graced the stages as principal dancer for several ballet companies such as the Ukrainian National Ballet, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, and the Royal Danish Ballet.

Symphonic Dances is described by Ratmansky as a set that mixes senses, and has a more abstract narrative. “It’s very deep and enigmatic. It goes from melancholic and slow to crazy, fast and dynamic.”

Along with Symphonic Dances, there will be three George Balanchine contrasting favorites in Program III: The La Valse, The Steadfast Tin Soldier, and Tschaikovsky Pas de Deux.

Miami City Ballet’s Program III: The Masters will be performed (February 22-24) at the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts in West Palm Beach before continuing on to the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale (March 1-3) and the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts in Miami (March 8-10).  Symphonic Dances, by Alexi Ratmansky, the world’s leading classical choreographer, is the closing ballet for Miami City Ballet’s Program III: The Masters – which also features two masterworks by George Balanchine: the dramatic La Valse and the thrilling Tschaikovsky Pas de Deux — plus his enchanting The Steadfast Tin Soldier.
