Haute 100 Update: Oscar de la Renta Invites Shunned Fashion Designer John Galliano to His Studio

Oscar de la Renta is a fan of second chances. The fashion icon recently invited shunned designer John Galliano to spend some time in his New York design studio over the next three weeks. According to Women’s Wear Daily, Galliano will reportedly assist de la Renta with the collection he plans to show at New York Fashion Week in February.

“John and I have known each other for many years and I am a great admirer of his talent,” de la Renta explained. “He has worked long and hard on his recovery and I am happy to give him the opportunity to reimburse himself in the world of fashion and reacclimate in an environment where he has been so creative.”

Galliano was previously fired from his position as the creative director of Christian Dior — and axed from his own label — following an anti-Semitic tirade caught on tape in 2010. He checked into rehab in Arizona and was soon brought to trial in France, where he was sentenced to 6,000 euros in fines.

Despite Galliano’s infamous indiscretion, de la Renta has no qualms about welcoming the designer back into the fashion world. “Everyone in life deserves a second chance, especially someone as talented as John,” he declared, “I think that life is about forgiving and helping people. I think John is doing all the right things.”
