Legendary Skiwear Innovator Klaus Obermeyer Celebrates 93

News | December 4, 2012

Iconic skiwear designer and Aspen resident Klaus Obermeyer celebrated his 93rd birthday on Sunday at the Ajax Tavern with strudel, skiing and his good-natured sense of humor. After blowing out a single candle on the dessert strudel–his favorite–he quipped “I’m sure gald I only have one candle to blow out,” according to a party-goer.

He is the founder of Sport Obermeyer, an internationally renown ski apparel company. Obermeyer, who still skis regularly and can sometimes be found yodeling while doing so, moved to Aspen in 1947 from Germany. He is credited with inventing the first quilted down ski parka (knit from his own stitched down comforter) and mirrored ski sunglasses (now called goggles).
