Olympic silver medal winner and professional tennis star Maria Sharapova received a key to Manhattan Beach from Mayor Wayne Powell during the September 18 City Council meeting.
The 25-year-old tennis pro has won Wimbledon, the U.S. Open and the French Open. She also won a silver medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London and is ranked No. 2 in the world.
Upon receiving the key, Manhattan Beach resident Sharapova joked, “Does it pay for the meters here?” and added, “This is a great place to come home to. I’m so privileged to be part of this community.”
