A Kremlin spokesman announced that there have are plans to commission the design and production of a series of luxury cars to be used by Kremlin officials.

The project would include having a Russian carmaker make multiple models of luxury cars for use by officials and in official motorcades. In 2010, Former President Dmitry Medvedev had ordered his administration to look at renewing production at the ZiL plant to make cars for officials, but a new project will likely not include ZiL, according to spokesmen. Other options are being considered and an official announcement on the project could be coming soon.

One rumored company being considered for the project is GAZ Group, who have made cars used by officials in the Soviet Union.

In April, President Vladimir Putin said that all “state and municipal” officials should only purchase cars produced within the countries of the Customs Union, which includes Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan. Currently, state officials use a range of foreign-made cars like BMW, Mercedes and Ford.
