The Kahala Hotel Pays Tribute to Julia Child
Julia Child said it best: “Life itself is the proper binge.”
So in honor of the award-winning chef’s 100th birthday anniversary, The Kahala Hotel & Resort is hosting a month-long series of culinary events, dinners and a la carte menu items made from the recipes in Child’s famous cookbook, “Mastering the Art of French Cooking,” in August.
(Dante Camara, shown above, coordinated this culinary series for the hotel.)
Some highlights:
• James Beard Foundation Dinner, 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 12, Maile Ballroom. This gourmet French dinner, featuring regional Hawaii chefs and a surprise French chef, will benefit the James Beard Foundation and showcase the best of Hawaii’s farm-to-table homegrown ingredients. Cost is $275 per person before July 1, $325 after July 1.
• The Kahala Wine & Food Festival: A Celebration of France, 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 18. The hotel’s annual wine and food festival will pair its award-winning vintners from California with a special nod to the French art of winemaking. Cost is $100, $150 with VIP entry, $125 at the door.
• Universite Pattisserie — Better with Butter, 9 a.m. Saturdays, Aug. 4, 11 and 25, The Veranda. This two-hour culinary journey takes you to France for a cooking demonstration featuring “Better with Butter” French pastries, desserts and braising and basting cooking techniques, followed by high tea. Cost is $85 per person.
