LACMA’s Collectors Committee Weekend Raises $2.8 Million for New Artwork

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) held its annual Collectors Committee weekend where museum supporters and trustees heard pitches from staff curators on what pieces of new art they believe the museum should acquire. Terry Semel, Steve Tisch, and Jamie McCourt were among those that helped acquire works by Neshat, Rauschenberg and more.
On April 21, seventy-nine members of the committee heard pitches at the Collectors Committee weekend as each curator identified an individual artwork or decorative-arts piece that they believe the museum should acquire. Many of the pieces are offered for sale by estates and galleries at discounted prices for the museum.
The pieces being pitched included an Albrecht Durer engraving, a Robert Rauschenberg screen print and an elevator surround from the Chicago Stock Exchange Building designed by Louis Sullivan.
Following the pitches, LACMA held a cocktail party, live auction and dinner where the committee voted for their choices. A total of $2.8 million was raised to acquire seven of the 10 pieces of work presented during the day.
Tisch said, “LACMA is one of the greatest museums in the world and this weekend was all about fund-raising, having fun getting more art into the museum…”
