Craft Breweries Becoming More And More Popular In China

News | April 10, 2012

China, the country that consumes more beer than anywhere else in the world, is now developing a flavor for craft beer. Beijing has two breweries and Nanjing has one, but Shanghai is where craft brewing has taken off.

In the past two years, the number of breweries in Shanghai has nearly doubled thanks to the city’s population of expats and the rising interest of Chinese citizens.

The increase in craft beer enthusiasts prompted French shop-owner Cedric Bourlet to open his own beer boutique called Cheers In last year. The shop now has two branches and stocks bottles of craft brews like Oregon-made Rogue Ales and Scottish Brewdog beers. Cheers In even offers a delivery service.

The city’s top breweries include Shanghai brewery, which opened a second branch, Boxing Cat Brewery (which opened a second post last year) and the Brew, which is housed inside the Kerry Hotel.
