EMM Group was granted a permit, after a protracted battle with Community Board 3 on the Lower East Side, to take over the long-since vacant space at 199 Bowery. The group–composed of Eugene Remm, Mark Birnbaum and Michael Hirtenstein, has a “lofty” concept for the 19,000-square-foot LES space; a mega-size “Asian fusion restaurant” with a front-of-house bakery from Catch pastry chef Thiago Silva and a jazz lounge down below.
The new space will launch in September. The EMM team is currently in the process of opening an outpost of its three-floor seafood Meatpacking restaurant, Catch, in South Beach.
