China Replaces Great Britain As Fifth-Largest Wine Consuming Country

In 2011, China displaced Great Britain as the fifth-largest wine consuming country in the world. The United States ranked number one.

U.S. consumers imbibed 3.7 billion bottles of wine in 2011, white China drank through 1.9 billion, according to data from the International Wine and Spirit Research.

To be expected, Old World wine drinkers in Italy, France and Germany came in second, third and fourth place, respectively. Although this news will undoubtedly boost the spirits of Chinese wine exporters, the majority of wine consumers remains in the West, and it will likely remain that way.
