Haute Auto: George Harrison’s Aston Martin DB5 Sold for $549,045

A 1965 Aston Martin DB5 that was previously owned by Beatles guitarist George Harrison has sold for $549,045 at a recent Coys of London Auction.

Selling for around $235,305 more than pre-auction estimates, it was a fierce bidding war between several interested collectors that hiked the final selling price of this Aston Martin DB5 up to over half a million dollars.

According to reports, the lucky buyer is a Beatles fan from Houston, Texas who hopes to use the car to raise money for Christian charities. Harrison, who passed away of lung cancer in 2001 was a Buddhist for most of his life, however he has been quoted as saying, “All religions are branches of one big tree. It doesn’t matter what you call Him just as long as you call.”

At the auction, Harrison’s luxury classic car wasn’t the only one to far exceed pre-auction estimates. Bernie Ecclestone’s former Mercedes-Benz 540 K was expected to sell for $784,350 but the final sale was nearly $1.4 million. In addition, a Mercedes-Benz 300 SL roadster was sold for $538,064, nearly $157,000 more than expected.
