Haute 100 Update: NYC Architect Richard Meier to Receive 2011 AIA President’s Award
World-renowned architect Richard Meier has been chosen to receive the AIA (American Institue of Architects) 2011 President’s Award to honor his significant influence on New York City. The award reception will be held at the Heritage Ball at the Chelsea Piers, where Meier will be honored along with three other individuals who have demonstrated a commitment to the importance of design in the city and beyond.
Meier, an original member of The New York Five, is receiving the prestigious award, which is awarded by the AIA New York Chapter to an architect whose work has made an indelible impact on New York City. Previous recipients include Philip Johnson, I.M. Pei, and Henry Cobb.
His rationalist building designs have yielded incredibly striking buildings, most of which make a characteristic and prominent use of the color white, including the Perry Street Towers, Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art, and many others spanning the globe. His 1972 commission of the Getty Center catapulted him into popularity and the work of his Richard Meier & Partners Architects has influenced global locations ranging from Tel Aviv to China.
Also receiving honors on that night include President of The Trust for Governors Island Leslie Koch, who will be receiving the Center for Architecture Foundation Award, Commissioner of New York City Department of Transportation Janette Sadik-Khan with the Center for Architecture Award, and Gary Barnett, the President of Extell Development Company, who will be receiving the AIA New York Chapter Award.
