Haute 100 Update: Jennifer Siebel Newsom’s ‘Miss Representation’ Documentary Screening Next Week
Jennifer Siebel Newsom, wife of former San Francisco mayor and current governor of California Gavin Newsom, will be screening her documentary film on Tuesday, Oct. 18. Miss Representation focuses on how the media portrays girls and women as sexual objects and will be screened at Alameda Point.
The film was written, directed, and produced by Siebel Newsom and focuses on how the media depict females not as leaders, but with a focus instead on their looks. According to her, the film “explores the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in America” and “challenges the limited portrayal for powerful women as encouraged by the mainstream media.”
“It’s an amazing film,” said Girls Inc. teen program coordinator Diana Cristales. “It’s not really just about women, but about teen boys, fathers, brothers, the entire community. Young women are so used to being valued for their beauty rather than their leadership skills.”
The film contains interviews with strong female celebrities including Jane Fonda, Margaret Cho, Lisa Ling, Condoleezza Rice, Rosario Dawson, Katie Couric, and more. Demonstrating through clips of talk shows, it shows how men – and even some female broadcasters – berate women.

The film will be shown at Michaan’s Auctions Theater, 2700 Saratoga Street, Alameda Point. High school students with present student ID will be admitted free of charge. Adult tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. After the screening, an audience discussion will be moderated.
