Haute 100 Update: Hugh Hefner Takes Playboy Back to Its Retro Roots – and Prices
Playboy editor-in-chief Hugh Hefner is bringing the iconic magazine back to its heyday in conjunction with NBC’s new primetime drama, “The Playboy Club.” Hefner is cutting the price of the new October issue, which hit newsstands earlier this month, to just 60 cents to commemorate the 1960s, perhaps the magazine’s greatest era and that Hefner described as “some of the best and most romantic years of my life.”
Laura Benanti, who stars in “The Playboy Club” is gracing the cover of the retro issue in a bunny outfit – a nod to the days when the hottest Chicago nightclub was characterized by its young women in the iconic bunny look. The retro issue was styled after the issues from 1961, when the Playboy Club was founded.
The issue also features a 10-page spread that features some of the original Playboy “Bunnies”, women who worked at the historic club, and an “insider’s guide” that offers readers a chance to win a trip for two to the Playboy Club currently open at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas.
Although it is common knowledge that the world’s most legendary playboy himself has cash to spare, Hefner said that he fully expects to make up losses from the drastically reduced price of the October issue with increased advertising. In fact, Playboy editorial director Jimmy Jellinek says that the ad pages are up a whopping 70 percent for the special October issue.
