MTV Video Music Awards: A Tribute To Amy Winehouse
Ever the comedian, Russell Brand took the stage to honor Amy Winehouse at the VMA’s, and initially made jokes about the “crazy” singer. He followed with a sincere dedication that celebrated her as a true jazz artist. Amy Winehouse reintroduced the genre of jazz music, and made it her own. She had an undeniable talent that came to screeching halt when the musician passed away last month.
Although Amy Winehouse could possibly have received more press for her drug and alcohol addiction than her talent, industry insiders know the real Amy, the shining star whose bad habits inevitably got the best of her. An unlikely addition to the tribute was Tony Bennett, who shared both kind words about the singer, and footage from a recent recording session they had together.
Bruno Mars wowed viewers with his performance of Amy’s song ‘Valerie.’ With imagery of Amy Winehouse displayed on the screen while Mars performed, there was a chilling feeling in the air. This was a feeling that reminds us that although no longer with us, Amy Winehouse will forever have a place in the heart of the music industry.
Amy Winehouse is an English artist who emerged onto the music scene in early 2002. She began as an entertainment journalist for World Entertainment News Network. Eventually, Amy signed with Simon Fuller’s 19 Management. Amy had a fixation and deep admiration for 1960’s girl bands like The Ronettes and The Supremes. Her signature look, thick cat eye eyeliner and an over-powering up-do, was actually inspired by The Ronettes. In 2008, the unique singer went on to win three Grammy awards for best female pop vocal performance, record of the year, and song of the year.
They say that artists are tortured souls, and in the case of Amy Winehouse this proved to be true. Although she achieved the kind of success that other musicians only dream of, Amy’s addiction ultimately took her life. To the legend that is Amy Winehouse, your music and legacy live on.
