5 Minutes with: Charlie Birkett, CEO of The Yacht Company

Charlie Birkett, CEO of The Yacht Company

While many of us find ourselves prepping for an escape this summer, it’s important to know all our options when booking a vacation. While there is always the idea of a plane, a train, and perhaps an automobile, I think it’s time we shine a light on yachts. Where else would you get a better glimpse into the hautest toy than from a man who has been sailing since he was just a little boy, Charlie Birkett.

Charlie is the generating force and main man behind The Yacht Company, one of the top yacht charter and sales companies in the world. Based in the Port of Monaco, with teams also operating from the UK, France and the Gulf, YCO provides sales, purchase, charter, management and project management services for luxury yachts. Well established, YCO is also recognized as an innovator in the superyacht industry.

This year, YCO comes ashore to where else, than the Empire State, bringing us an opportunity to test the waters, in the best fashion possible. A Mercer Street location will be opening mid-Fall.

Charlie has had his sights set on the water for as long as he can remember and at just 36 years old, has definitely come full circle. Here’s what he had to say on memories, favorite destinations, and the best-kept secrets of yachting.

What’s your first memory on a boat?

Rowing on a 4′ little boat around an island on Lake Windermere on my own when I was five years old.

Lake Windermere, England

Favorite Destination and why?

For me and my family, it has to be the island of Mustique – It’s quiet and elegant but there’s lots to do for the children and the setting is magical.  Mustique hasn’t been spoiled at all and when you’re there you can really feel the community spirit, everyone on the island becomes your friend.  It’s also a fantastic destination for yachts which of course, is always a plus for me!

Dream Yacht Trip—destination, guests (famous or not), and what time of year and why?

I’d love to explore the islands off Venezuela because of the amazing natural scenery and that there is virtually no one there – it would be heaven, but it might have to wait until the kids are a bit older.

What should people know about yachting that they don’t already?

That it represents the best aspects of any kind of holiday, all in one.  Flexibility, private family time, the exclusivity of discovering places other people can’t get to, and the fact that it’s probably more affordable than most people think.

Best-Kept Yachting Destination secret?

If I told you that then it wouldn’t be a secret anymore!  We keep that kind of information for our clients…
