Urban Zen Launches Stephan Weiss Apple Awards

News | June 17, 2011

On June 9, celebrities and A-listers came together to honor the recipients of the inaugural Urban Zen Stephan Weiss Apple Awards. The ceremony honored President Bill Clinton for Preservation of Culture, Courtney Ross for Education and Dr. Mehmet Oz for Well-being. The three categories reflect the Urban Zen Foundation’s mission of commitment and courage to create change and inspire others.

The Awards marked the tenth anniversary of Stephan Weiss’s passing and pay homage to Weiss’s “Larger than Life” bronze apple sculpture in Hudson River Park. Inspired by Weiss’s creative legacy and his seven-year cancer battle, his wife, the fashion icon Donna Karan, established the Urban Zen Foundation in 2007.

Urban Zen’s core principles are creativity, collaboration and change. They work with children and other organizations to form alliances and foster healthy spiritual, emotional, and physical growth.

VIPs present included fashion colleagues such as Anna Wintour and Betsey Johnson, guitar legend Keith Richards, and many Hollywood stars such as Robert De Niro and Grace Hightower De Niro.
