Haute Spot: A Metamorphosis from Sen to Phao at Phao, Sag Harbor

News | May 6, 2011

Sen Restaurant in Sag Harbor has reincarnated its neighboring space, previously occupied by Sen Spice, with Phao Thai restaurant; but it seems that the conversion doesn’t stop here. This hip and contemporary downtown spot has somewhat of an alter ego to match, offering Thai cuisine during the dinner hour, but shifting gears by late night and morphing into a dynamic night club, complete with Karaoke on Thursdays and DJ nights on the weekends. This makes it the perfect one stop shop where you can enjoy a fabulous meal and ease your way into the next phase of your evening. Most importantly, this is all pulled off seamlessly and with finesse and style.

The new Phao features stylish décor with Southeast Asian influences via a wall of gold tile complimenting understated wooden tables with matching chairs, brown Kraft paper tablecloths, black cloth napkins, and a long acid-etched concrete L-shaped bar, separated from the dining room by a decorative iron partition. Flickering votive candlelight about the space complete the ambiance. Some cozy booths lend to privacy created by dividing brass screens.

Some restaurants rest on the laurels of their atmosphere…Here they don’t.

The food is the shining star at Phao, with Thai specialties and innovative dishes such as their Thai Basil Rolls; offering varied textures and flavors with vegetables, Thai basil, vermicelli, herbs and perfectly poached shrimp. If you like lamb, try the Lamb Lollipops, tender baby chops flavored with garlic cilantro and a soy reduction. The Shrimp Lemongrass Soup is also a nice starter, itself an authentic seafood broth stocked with aromatic shrimp with galangal spice and kaffir lime leaves. For a lighter choice, The Spinach Meung Kum Salad offers a healthy portion of spinach leaves tossed with toasted coconut, toasted shallots, red onion and roasted peanuts in a light palm sugar, citrus and lime vinaigrette; unique and flavorful. Entrées feature favorites such as the Beef Massaman, a home style Massaman curry paste infused with exotic herbs and sautéed with Thai coconut milk, tamarind, potatoes, onions and roasted peanuts is predicted to become a Signature of theirs. The night is still young and so are you. After the kitchen closes, why not order a cocktail and stay put.

Look for special guest DJs on Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday nights or belt a favorite tune at Karaoke every Friday from 10:30 p.m. to 2 a.m. DJ Tone Tigga spins hits every Saturday from 10:30 p.m. to 2 a.m.
