Haute Spot: East Hampton’s Hedges Inn
Listed in The National Register of Historic Places and dating back to 1652, this house was originally built as a residence for the affluent Hedges family. In the latter part of the 1800s, the Hedges opened its door to guests, reinventing itself as a lodging inn, with 12 guest rooms complimented by beautifully decorated common areas.
Today, while the setting is reminiscent of grand times past, a fully restored version of the original invites guests to stay, offering the very same opulence and splendor, but now with all the modern conveniences and flair added on, making for a perfect upscale hideaway. This all translates to a May/December marriage of sorts, whereby contemporary accoutrements partners with classical charm.
No scrimping on fine touches here as evidenced by the richly styled metal sage and sand fabrics and décor, and the optimum use of natural lighting, all creating an airy yet cozy ambience. Each room is different but all filled with vintage antiques, mirrors and artwork. High end amenities like Bulgari toiletries; a private bath in each room, flat screen TVs, luxurious bedding and more complete the package. Turn down service at night includes a sampling of Godiva chocolates left atop your pillow as if a sweet tooth fairy stopped by in your absence.
The exterior continues the interior seamlessly in that the property sits on two acres of magnificently landscaped gardens, shaded by a row of elm trees and across the street from a serene pond where swans gently glide. Relaxed seating can be enjoyed throughout on elegant wicker and rattan furniture under an expansive patio awning, comfortable couches in the den or on the front porch’s rocking chairs within view of the pond.
Go ahead.
Find a quiet seat outside the property on an Indian summer day, cuddle up with a good book and enjoy the quiet indulgence of doing absolutely nothing much.
Wake up with an appetite? Guests here may enjoy breakfast in an informal, country-style dining room where French doors open onto a spacious patio replete with a stunning garden-view. Later in the day, a cocktail can be had from their fully stored bar.
Bonus: Mega convenience. Walk east along to the chic shopping, gallery, dining and theater district. Walk south and pass magnificent mansions and breathtaking landscapes en route to East Hampton’s Main Beach, rated one of the America’s top ten beaches year after year. Grab a complimentary beach towel, a lounge chairs, and sun umbrella and go.
