High Five: Friends of Dorothy’s Fifth Year of Giving
No munchkins here, but the Friends of Dorothy are definitely an eclectic mix of men and women that all have unwavering support and love for helping those with HIV/AIDS here in Orange County. In its fifth year, they’ve got more fun events planned that are sure to make 2011 another great year for the guild.
Since its inception in 2007, the Friends of Dorothy have raised over $450,000 for HIV and AIDS. To keep the momentum going, they’ve planned new and exciting events this year and bringing back old favorites. The first is on St. Patrick’s Day, where the guild will be hosting a Friend-Raiser at Lexus of Newport Beach, hoping to get new recruits at this annual membership drive. Next, on May 25th, they’ll be hosting their annual Spring on the Runway Fashion Show Rave, where they’ll have a night of fashion and fun (previous events have been hosted at Bloomingdale’s South Coast Plaza and Macy’s South Coast Plaza, pictured above). And to end the season, they’ll have a Halloween Costume Party coinciding with the Red Shoe Awards, where you can be sure the costumes will be more daring than demure.
Chair Barbara Venezia says, “Five years is an amazing landmark for this guild. No one ever suspected a simple Drag Queen Tupperware party in my back yard would give birth to this amazing guild of dedicated volunteers.” As you can expect, each and every one of this season’s events will be better than the last, filled with fun, fashion and the fierceness that this guild has come to embody.
