Be prepared to add a little sexiness between the pages of one of the hottest new book releases around. Author Karen Abbott’s latest book American Rose: A Nation Laid Bare: The Life and Times of Gypsy Rose Lee, rehashes the life, loves, groundbreaking career milestones and scandals that plagued the popular burlesque star. On January 18 at 7 p.m. Acapella Books presents their regular Ballroom Book Bash held at The Highland Inn Ballroom Lounge where Abbott will perform a special reading of her novel as well as answers questions from the audience. This book is definitely a great addition to any reader’s book list this year. If nothing else, maybe we could learn some of those legendary burlesque moves popularized by Ms. Lee…you never know when it comes in handy!
Joining Karen Abbott for this month’s installment of the Ballroom Book Bash is none other than Bernadette Seacrest and Her Provocateurs providing rousing entertainment to keep the party rocking all night long. A native Atlantan, this isn’t Abbott’s first time as a featured guest of the Ballroom Book Bash, she made one of her first appearances back in 2007 to much fanfare.
Abbott was inspired to pen Lee’s story after her grandmother shared details of one of the legendary burlesque star’s performances. Three years of research followed, during which time Abbott was able to track down Lee’s sister, actress June Havoc, for access to some of the last interviews before Lee’s death. The result is American Rose which manages to go behind the mask and public persona that Lee created for herself and that would also cripple her existence in the end.
