Weekend Planner: Sippin’ by the River

Look out your rain-spattered window my dears: Summer is gone. There are only a few scant days until the chilled winds begin to blow and the walk to your office results in chattering teeth and a red nose. Go ahead and shed a tear for the change of season, but be sure not to let it land in your beer. Because that’s how you’ll be sending off the heat and humidity — with a few drinks al fresco at the annual Sippin’ by the River.

Sunday, October 1, Penn’s Landing will be filled with thirsty fans as the celebration kicks off. It’s the sweet 16 for the popular annual event, which brings together area restaurants, wineries and breweries for a day of fun in the sun (or so we hope). More than 30 beer and wine stands will keep the good times flowing, while cooking demonstrations and favorite foods will turn up the heat. Look for names like Brooklyn Brewery, Yards Brewing Company and Chateau Ste. Michelle Winery.

Highlights this year include Beer 101 and Wine 101 mini seminars, hosted by area experts Gary Monterosso, Robert Peters and Richard Unti, plus the live music stylings of DAME.

Proceeds from the event benefit the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America, which runs research, education and support programs for the 1.4 million Americans suffering from the conditions.

Tickets are $35 through Saturday and $40 at the door. Entry includes all beverage tasting; food is available at additional cost.

Sippin’ by the River will run from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Penn’s Landing, located at Columbus Boulevard and Spring Garden Street. For more information, visit www.sippinbytheriver.com.
