To the Republic: Henderson Gets a Divine Comfort Food Restaurant

News | September 22, 2010

Henderson has to be ecstatic about the opening of Republic Kitchen & Bar, the American bistro that’s a shining beacon of great grub among the chains that pepper Eastern Avenue just south of the 215. And American bistro doesn’t do the restaurant justice. Think of it more as comfort food that your Mom made when you were a kid with a caveat.

See, Chef Josh Green worked as a personal chef for acts such as U2, Paul McCartney, Jimmy Buffet, the Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, Mariah Carey and Damien Marley. So the dishes he makes are healthier versions. In fact, pastry chef Mary Jarmolowich is a fitness competitor and model.

You would never guess that after tasting the Buffalo chicken bites served with Maytag blue cheese and ranch dip. It’s a clever turn on a bar staple that won’t leave you feeling greasy. The tuna nachos come served on fried wontons with a wasabi guacamole. Simply heaven.

For a main course, try the Steak’ Em and cheese, yes, that after-school treat you ate as a kid. The Republic Kobe sloppy Joe uses ground Kobe beef, Maui onions and ripe tomatoes, or try the Vermont cheddar grilled cheese served on a hunk of sourdough bread with a cup of the daily soup. That will be perfect for the cooler weather.

Trust us when we tell you to order the PB&J on the dessert menu. These peanut butter wedges come with organic grape, strawberry and raspberry dipping sauces. Definitely not on the diet but worth the calories. We’re excited to try the  croissant French toast. The menu says, “Trust us,” and we will.

And that’s just the lunch menu. For dinner, try the Republic meatloaf “TV Dinner” with garlic mashed potatoes, corn and a mini apple cobbler or go with a turkey version with stuffing, corn and a mini cherry cobbler. Both come served in old-fashioned porcelain TV trays and taste far better than their frozen cousins. Other items include the lobster pot pie, beef stroganoff and the Republic burger, a half pounder with smoked cheddar cheese, applewood smoked bacon, balsamic glazed onions, French fries, home-made pickles and heirloom tomatoes.

Critic have been raving about the weekly Republic Jazz Brunch. The menu includes an array of pastries, yogurts and hot dishes as well as specialties like chicken and waffles or eggs and truffles with lightly scrambled eggs, shaved truffles and chicken sausage, or the Republic surf and turf Benedict featuring sliced filet, Maine lobster meat and Hollandaise sauce. They’re still tweaking the brunch menu, so it may change.

You can even get in on happy hour specials from 5 to 7 p.m. and reverse happy hour from midnight until 2 a.m. seven days a week. You can hang out in the Loft upstairs, a comfortable area featuring plush booths, high tables and a wide array of board games to keep you amused.

Republic is open daily with lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and dinner from 5 to 10 p.m. A special bar menu is served until 2 a.m. Brunch is served Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Republic Kitchen & Bar is located at 9470 S. Eastern Ave., Suite 110, Henderson, 702.463.3500, www.republickitchenandbar.com.
