Candy-Coated Couture at Douglas Hannant’s Spring/Summer 2011 Runway Show
It was an intimate gathering today at The Edwardian Room at the Plaza Hotel, where designer Douglas Hannant debuted his Spring/Summer 2011 collection. The runway show, which was set apart from the chaos of Lincoln Center, featured 37 beautifully designed gowns. The designer’s first stand-alone boutique is at the Shops at The Plaza, and so it was fitting that Hannant chose to hold his runway show there.
“Candy” was the theme of this season’s collection, and every song that played in the background referenced the word candy in some way. Even the gift bags were filled with candy like taffy, peppermints and Smarties. The colorful candies matched the color palate of the collection — a mix of lemon yellow, mint green, watermelon pink and lavender.
Florals were also used in a variety of ways, from delicate patterns to voluminous accents (like those seen on the neckline of the yellow dress above). Large bows were a theme as well, as if each dress were a precious gift, and the bow was the accent that wrapped it all up. And while the bows and candy theme may have played up more girlie details, there were also elegant, sophisticated silhouettes like pencil skirts, skinny waist belts and double-breasted pea coats.
Hannant has become a staple to the the social elite of the Upper East Side, and many of these women were actually sitting in the front row at the show. He describes his target woman as someone who “loves fine things in every facet of her life. She loves luxury. She wants modern, fresh and new, yet it isn’t big news in the sense that she is never going to be wearing the splashiest, trendiest, most overexposed thing of the moment.” He certainly held this woman in mind when creating this collection. The dresses were modern, and innovative and the show satisfied our couture craving — and our sugar craving!
