Spam for Brunch? It’s a Possibility as Sunda Hosts an Exclusive Tasting Event for New Menu Options

General Manager Aeron Lancero, Executive Chef Rodelio Aglibot, and the team at Sunda and Rockit Ranch hosted an exclusive Tasting Brunch to try out potential new brunch menu items on 30 of their lucky twitter followers.  This awesome breakfast party of Chicago foodies in the social media scene featured fourteen dishes, five from their existing menu to set the pace and eight potential new options to get feedback on (powered by the Sochu Bloody Mary bar). As a huge Sunda fan (in my top three restaurants in the city), I was extremely excited to get to taste the goods.

The existing fan favorites included the Loco Moco (a hamburger steak atop fried eggs and rice, a great hangover cure I’m told), Tempura French Toast (with Caramelized Bananas and Brown Sugar, big thumbs up), Pork Belly on Crispy Rice with Egg Sauce (the Asian take on Eggs Benedict), the Thai Omelet, and the Oxtail Smash, their delicious version of corned beef hash with fried eggs and horseradish sauce.

The Potential New Items on Trial included:

Crepes, a big hit at our table, but it’s hard not to love mixed berries and creme anglaise

Portuguese Sausage, Eggs and Rice, pass, the analogy of burnt hotdogs was muttered

Spinach and Mushroom Egg White Omelet, a safe bet, nothing too out of the ordinary

Shrimp on Crispy Rice with Egg Sauce, delicious, another spin on Eggs Benedict

Biscuits and Gravy, also a delicious sweet treat with brown sugar and pork belly

Brown Rice Chirashi, your standard bowl of Sashimi, for breakfast, though?

Unagi Don, baked eel over rice, also more of a dish you’d expect at dinner

…and the ultimate concoction Spam Musubi with Ramen Noodles. Yes, we’re talking deep fried Spam with Tamago, over sushi rice next to a bowl of Ramen Noodles. Gotta give them credit, if I didn’t know I was eating Spam, it wouldn’t have been bad. Sort of like extra salted Canadian Bacon. Memorable to say the least.

Still in a food coma from 11 am, all around great food, good company, perfect little Saturday morning. Bon Appetit!
