Haute Event: Wine Tasting at Cairnwood

Bucks County is home to its fair share of estates and mansions, but as anyone who has ever driven through tiny Bryn Athyn can tell you, the stunning Cairnwood Estate is the real deal. Regal and refined without feeling imposing, the Beaux Arts building — built in 1895 by Pittsburgh Plate Glass founder John Pitcairn — is often the backdrop of gorgeous weddings and private soirees. And next Thursday, August 19, the estate is throwing yet another event: a summer wine tasting with Chaddsford Winery.

Enjoy the sunset over the lawn from the mansion’s veranda as you sip seasonal and sweet dessert wines from the Delaware County vineyard. Feastivities Events will also be on hand with gourmet treats, including wine’s best bud, imported cheese. A live jazz band will entertain guests well into the night.

The $15 entry fee serves as a donation to the non-profit estate’s preservation, restoration, programs and operations. More fun can be have, and more charity given, during a blind wine tasting challenge or with the purchase of a $25 “mystery box”: a secret prize worth at least $50. Possible scores include Cairnwood memberships, gift certificates for area shops and tickets to the estate’s event of the year, the Cairnwood Gala in March 2011. The event’s theme is “Dream Garden,” pulling inspiration from the ethereal glass mosaic of the same name installed in the lobby of Philadelphia’s Curtis Center.

The wine tasting runs 7 – 10:30 p.m., and guests are welcome to stroll the grounds. Grab a glass of something chilled and a private corner of the garden and enjoy the summer evening under the stars.
