Our Haute 100 list details the accomplishments of the most influential people in each of our markets—Miami, New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. These people continue to make moves, so rather than waiting for the next Haute 100 issue to come out, we thought we’d provide you with regular updates on those who are making headlines. Today, David de Rothschild marks the end of his plastic adventure.

What Made Him Haute: This noted environmentalist (of the famous British Rothschild banking family) and his organization, Adventure Ecology, along with a crew of experts, scientists, and creatives, had the crazy idea of sailing from the San Francisco Bay to Australia on a 60-foot catamaran, dubbed Plastiki, made entirely of plastic bottles and recycled waste products.

What Makes Him Haute Now: The Plastiki set sail four months ago with David de Rothschild as the expedition leader. The goal of the journey was to raise environmental awareness, the motto being:  “Beating Waste, One Bottle at a Time.” (Fact: roughly 50 percent of all plastics end up in the ocean.) The six-person crew has finally made it across the Pacific Ocean, landing in Sydney, Australia, after their 128-day voyage. Conditions of their venture were far from glamorous, as they battled heavy winds, brutal temperatures, and one crew member even missed the birth of his own child! The adventurist is continuing the project on land, hoping to bring more social urgency to nixing single-use plastics.
