Golf in Presidential Style on Martha’s Vineyard

Going green is a much easier proposition when it means heading to the golf green as President Obama  did once again this past week at Vineyard Golf Course in Edgartown on Martha’s Vineyard. What makes Vineyard Gold Course unique, beyond its presidential visit, is it is perhaps the only completely organic golf course in the nation. The groundskeepers use no artificial fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides or other synthetic chemicals in the up keep of the 18-hole course. Instead, the use of bio-stimulants and composted fertilizers manage to keep the ground lush and attractive for its members.

This eight year old private traditional links course is comprised of 235 acres as well as a beautiful club house wrapped in an expansive veranda that boasts stunning views of the greens. The dining room is also thought by many to be one of the finest on the Vineyard.

And while weeds may occasionally sneak on to the landscape, non- members without a member accompanying them is still a strict no-no on this very exclusive course.  According to the New York Times, annual membership dues are $120,000 after an initiation fee of $350,000. Membership is now at 288 proprietary members.

The grounds may not be a picture perfect as the pristine and chemical laden courses most are accustom to playing on, but the focus, rather, is on playability. Perhaps this is closer to the rolling hills and rugged terrain of the first Scottish golf courses and is more of how the game is meant to be played. Think of it as playing football on a grass field instead of the camera-ready unnatural turf.  It appears teeing off at Vineyard Golf Course is all about the game, while it also happens to be caring for the environment as well.
