Kick Diabetes in the Butt with Chef Becker and Dr. Shapiro
If you didn’t RSVP for today’s lunch at Abe & Arthur’s, we certainly feel sorry for you because renowned executive chef Franklin Becker and Dr. Howard M. Shapiro, author of The New York Times bestselling Picture Perfect Weight Loss series, have teamed up for something special.
Chef Becker has been ruling the chopping blocks at the trendy dining locale that is owned by Eugene Remm & Mark Birnbaum of EMM Group, who we talked with in the most recent edition of Haute Living New York).
To celebrate their new book, Eat & Beat Diabetes with Picture Perfect Weight Loss, the pair is hosting what will not only be one of the most delicious ways to spend a Tuesday afternoon, but an event chock-full of good-for-your-body delights, particularly in regards to managing diabetes.
The disease is not such a faraway concept for the famous New York chef. At the tender age of 27, he was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, and after the shock waves passed, he decided to turn his life around and start anew.
He lost 35 pounds and created an entirely new diet—a life plan he hopes to share with fellow diabetic patients around the world.
His trick? It’s something called the Beat Diabetes Pyramid, a simple plan that, when incorporated into a moderately healthy routine, can work wonders. Not to worry though, this is not a boring hundred-something page book that only yaps about the benefits of being healthy.
In fact, for the sake of the readers’ entertainment, Chef Becker and Dr. Shapiro let readers “See and Choose,” which is basically a slew of pictorial comparisons used to show audiences everywhere what’s healthy and what’s not. Plus, it demonstrates that you don’t have to be a professional chef to create some yumminess on your plate, as the book is full of replacements and alternatives for your favorite greasy, fatty “nutrients.”
How does cucumber mango salad, ratatouille, and even peanut butter cups sound? (Suck on that Reese’s).
And Chef Becker is not the only one coming up with all of these delicious recipes. He has the help of some of our favorite cooking wizards to also show the ropes of healthy eating through some of their recipes including Michel Nischan, Bill Telepan, and Kim Canteenwalla.
At the end of the day, it’s about being healthy and it’s about family. Everyday 2,200 Americans are newly diagnosed with diabetes, the sixth most potent killer in America.
Eat & Beat Diabetes with Picture Perfect Weight Loss from Chef Becker and Dr. Shapiro comes out on May 2010. Until then, sample a taste of what Chef Becker is preaching about at Abe & Arthur’s at 409 West 14th St.
