Maradona Owes Millions for Unpaid Taxes

News | January 15, 2010

Former legendary Argentinian soccer player, Diego Maradona, failed to pay tax on his earnings, and now owes Italy more than 36 million Euros ($51.9 million) in unpaid taxes. The Italian tax officials have already taken many of Maradona’s belongings to make up for some of the money. One of these items is a diamond-studded gold earring. The exquisite earring was sold at an auction recently and fetched 25,000 Euros ($36,060), extremely higher than its originally estimated price of 5,500 Euros ($7,930). As a form of memorabilia, the white gold earring came with a copy of a police charge sheet with Maradona’s signature on it, and was purchased by a woman at an auction in Bolzano, in north-eastern Italy. Although she prefers to remain anonymous, she did say that she was very satisfied with the purchase. Unfortunately, such an auction won’t help out Maradona much, as the Italian taxpayer’s association estimates that his debt has accrued a further 22.4 million Euros ($32.3 million) in interest.
