A Midwinter Night’s Dream and Nick Swisher: Heroes for Hope Event

On January 8, 2010, New York Yankee Nick Swisher, comedian and actress Caroline Rhea and actor Richard King joined A Midwinter Night’s Dream to honor several Heroes for Hope at the annual event help by the Northport High School Chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS).

A Midwinter Night’s Dream is an annual charity fundraiser held by the high school’s NHS chapter that supports Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ASL). The unique event is run by 42 high school students, ranging in age from 15 to 17 years old. Every year the students honor several Hereos for Hope that give support and inspiration to the students and the charity. On January 8, the honorees included baseball star Nick Swisher and president and COO of the Frye Company, Larry Tarica.

Swisher told the crowd, “I am honored and humbled to be here tonight to accept this award. It’s amazing when you put the right group of people together with the same common goal how much you can achieve and these students deserve all the accolades.”

Since starting the event five years ago, the group has raised more than $1.067 million and this year alone they raised more than $400,000 at the event. The students were inspired to take action after a second teacher in their district was diagnosed with ASL and to this day they continue to work year round on the charity, putting on multiple events to benefit ALS research.

On January 8, attendees included:  Students and faculty of the Northport High School, Nick Swisher (New York Yankees), Sarah Hughes (Olympic Figure Skater), Adam Graves (New York Rangers), Richard Kind (Curb Your Enthusiasm / Mad About You), Caroline Rhea (Comedienne / The Biggest Loser), Bobby Burke (Gossip Girl / Rescue Me) John Scurti (Rescue Me) and Vincent Piazza (Rescue Me / The Sopranos).
