Section of Eiffel Tower Staircase Sold

News | December 16, 2009

An ironworker from the town of Troyes bought a section of staircase from the Eiffel Tower itself on Monday for $125,000 at an auction in Paris. Comprising 40 steps, the staircase changed owners at a sale of Paris-themed souvenirs hosted by the Drouot Auction House. This staircase was dismantled in 1983 and has since been sold off in 24 distinct parts. One segment once sold for a staggering €550,000. The anonymous buyer intends to go one step further and chop up the 7.8m and sell it on again. It wouldn’t be the first time he’s done something like this, as he’s supposedly already divided a portion of the Berlin Wall.
