The most-talked about news of the week among the San Francisco social set? Trevor Traina’s nomination for ambassadorship. President Donald Trump, who has widely ignored California and all of its residents since taking office, has officially named Traina as his nominee to serve as the United States ambassador to Austria. For Traina to accept the position, his nomination must be approved by the Senate.

The San Francisco Chronicle received a news release from the Office of the Press Secretary, but little is known about how Traina received the nomination. His grandfather, Wiley T. Buchanan Jr., served as the U.S. ambassador to Austria and Luxembourg and was President Eisenhower’s chief of protocol.

If the Senate grants Traina the job, he will be expected to relocate to the U.S. Embassy in Vienna. It’s an interesting move for the tech entrepreneur who’s latest project is IfOnly, a platform that offers unique experiences. His mother, Dede Wilsey, is a fixture in the SF scene and long-time patron to the arts. His wife, Alexis, published a book last fall that is essentially her love letter to Napa. In fact, the Traina’s Napa home is currently featured in the February issue of Vogue. With two pre-teen children, it’s hard to imagine that the couple would leave their life here.
