Rihanna Designs Futuristic Sunglasses for Dior
Rihanna, whose fashion collaborations have ranged from Manolo Blahnik to Puma lately, is making another foray into the world of fashion with a haute sunglass collaboration with Dior.
The “This is What You Came For” singer and the French fashion house have collaborated on a colorful range of futuristic-looking sunglasses in shades of blue, silver, red, green, pink and gold.
The frames will be sold exclusively at Dior boutiques starting in June. The colored shades will sell for $840, while the baller 24-karat-gold-plated pair retails for $1,950.
The design partnership is a perfect pairing given that the Barbadian singer began working with the house as a brand ambassador last year. In fact, the 28-year-old songbird was named the company’s first black spokesperson last year.
In a statement released by Dior which was first announced on WWD, Rihanna states that her actual inspiration for the designs was La Forge from Star Trek. “I’ve always been obsessed with his eyewear, and when I got to Dior and saw all the materials I could play with, it all just came together,” she said.
She added, “The process was pretty seamless. I spent a day at Dior with their eyewear design team. I started by looking through all the archives to see what they’ve done in the past, then got acquainted with all the new materials. I literally sat there and drew and drew until I was happy with the design, and the team illustrated it for me right then and there. We picked materials and colors that same day, and after that it was a matter of weeks before I saw the first prototype.”
RiRi is a busy girl! In addition to acting as the Creative Director of Puma, sje ecently launched her “Denim Desserts” footwear collection with Manolo Blahnik; she also inked a major $10 million deal with LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton for a makeup line.
