Open Road Film has acquired distribution rights to the star-studded romantic comedy Mother’s Day, the company announced on Wednesday, July 23.
Slated to hit theaters April 29th, 2016, the film stars Julia Roberts, Jennifer Aniston, Kate Hudson and Jason Sudeikis. Additional cats members are expected to be announced in the next following weeks.
The film will tell interweaving storylines and will follow the lives of several mothers as the holiday approach.
The script was written by Anya Kochoff-Romano, Lily Hollander, Matt Walker and Tom Hines. It will be produced by Wayne Rice and Gulfstream Pictures’ Mike Karz with Garry Marshall, who is known for his holiday ensemble flicks, as the director. It will shoot in Atlanta.
Production for the film is slated to start next month.
The distribution deal was negotiated on behalf of Tom Ortenberg, chief executive officer of Open Road Films, Elliott Kleinberg, general counsel, and Peter Lawson, executive vice president of production and acquisitions.
The Creative Artist Agency (CAA) packaged the film, represented the domestic distribution rights as well as brokered the deal on behalf of the producers with executive producer Matthew Hooper of IME Law. Additionally, Hooper arranged the financing for the film.
In a statement, Ortenberg said, “We jumped at the chance to be a part of this film. Audiences everywhere will surely enjoy seeing moms celebrated by this fantastic cast and talented filmmaking team.”
Marshall’s last two films Valentine’s Day, which was released in 2010, and New Year’s Eve, which was released in 2011, did well. Valentine’s Day dominated the box office in 2010, approximately making $67 million over the four-day frame. It grossing an estimated $21 million on the actual day. The success of Marshall’s first holiday flick green lighted New Years Eve. While New Years did not rake in as much as its predecessor, it did debut at No. 1.
