Haute 100 LA: Tom Hanks Starring in a Steven Spielberg Cold War Film
With FX’s The Americans stunning viewers every week and making a serious case for the best and headiest show on TV, it’s safe to say that Cold War spy thrillers are all the rage right now. The time is right then for a Cold War-set film about spies to be given the epic treatment. Who better to tackle an epic international epic than the king of cinematic epics, Steven Spielberg?
True to the spy-driven nature of the story, very little details have been leaked about the film. We do know that Tom Hanks is set to star. Producer Marc Platt slipped that the officially still-untitled film will be called Bridge of Spies.
Disney, who is producing the film, commented that, “It’s a dramatic thriller set against the backdrop of a series of historic events, Bridge of Spies, tells the story of James Donovan (Hanks), a Brooklyn lawyer who finds himself thrust into the center of the Cold War when the CIA sends him on the near-impossible task to renegotiate the release of a captured American U-2 pilot. Screeenwriters Matt Chairman and Ethan & Joel Coen have woven the remarkable experience in Donovan’s life into a story inspired by true events that captures the essence of a man who risked everything and vividly brings his personal journey to life.”
Though John Williams, who has scored every Spielberg film other than The Color Purple, has dropped out, the film is slated to be released on October 16.
Though he just got sued by Marvin Gaye’s family for lifting a Gaye melody for the Robin Thicke track “Blurred Lines,” Pharrell Williams can’t be having too bad of a week: he has just been announced as the winner of the CFDA’s Fashion Icon Award.
Aside from having notoriously unique style (that Vivienne Westwood hat, anyone?), Williams is also being awarded for his numerous contributions to collections for fashion brands high and low: Moynat, Adidas, G-Star Raw, Moncler and more have all released items with Pharrell’s name on it.
Pharrell is certainly going to wear something crazy at the event. Last year’s winner, Rihanna, wore a dress in which you could see everything underneath.
Season after season television producer Ryan Murphy has been able to drop jaws with his FX series American Horror Story but the following news might be the most surprising tidbit yet: Lady Gaga will be the star of the upcoming fifth season, American Horror Story Hotel. Lady Gaga has been in films, like last year’s Sin City 2, but some people have reservations about her acting talent, even though she studied acting at NYU’s Tisch School for the Arts. But Murphy says do not worry, “I think she’s been looking for an outlet to really dig in there and create a character. I guarantee the role will shock people.”
