For years, San Franciscans and those throughout the Bay Area have toted their posh pooches to restaurants with outdoor seating. However, it didn’t become legal until Jan. 1, 2015 when a statewide law allowing pets at bars and restaurants—Gov. Jerry Brown, a pet parent, signed the legislation last summer—went into effect. Business owners still have the option of legally allowing dogs in outdoor spaces but expect to see more dog-friendly restaurants in the SF Bay Area. Here are our picks of 10 haute spots in the Bay Area and nearby Monterey County where you know your four-legged friend will be treated like a king, as in Cavalier King Charles. Bone appetit!

SAN FRANCISCO
Chouquet’s: This popular French bistro in Pacific Heights provides water bowls and cool, fresh water for pooches.

Rose’s Cafe: House made dog biscuits for furry friends are available at this neighborhood fave corner eatery in Cow Hollow.

NAPA VALLEY
Bouchon (Yountville): Stop by Thomas Keller’s Bouchon Bakery and pick up fresh-baked dog treats for Fido before heading to his French bistro serving traditional fare amid elegant, old-world surrounds.

Lucy Restaurant & Bar (Yountville): Dogs have their own menu at this restaurant at the swank Bardessono Hotel & Spa. Fifi can choose from Potato and Duck, Sweet Potato & Chicken or Vegetarian and for dessert, Carob Chip Cookie or Crunch Two-Tone Cookie.

Tra Vigne (St. Helena): Pooches can expect to receive water at this casual spot for Northern Italian food and which has a quaint, old world feel and tree-covered courtyard seating.

MONTEREY COUNTY
Casanova (Carmel-by-the-Sea): Whatever is in the kitchen can be ordered for canines at this popular restaurant, where a sign on the patio reads “Chien Gentil.”

Terry’s Lounge (Carmel-by-the-Sea): Pets and their people can enjoy a fine dining experience at this restaurant inside the über-pet-friendly Cypress Inn, co-owned by animal activist Doris Day. The chef will gladly cook for four-legged guests and Yappy Hour takes place daily from 4 to 6 p.m.

PortaBella (Carmel-by-the-Sea): The chef routinely whips up filet mignon, poached vegetables and other requested treats for pampered pups, who are welcomed on the front patio (ideal for pooch-watching) as well as the rear, which is more serene.

The Forge in the Forest (Carmel-by-the-Sea): Pet enthusiasts can enjoy the Dog Pound Patio, where pooches may order specialty items from their own menu that features kibble to grilled and sliced New York steak.

Tarpy’s Roadhouse (Monterey): You and your four-legged friend will enjoy the pretty patio at this American restaurant where a doggie dining menu offers everything from chicken breast fillet to sirloin steak
