Haute 100 Update: Shakira to Perform in Kiev for Opening of new $500M Soccer Stadium

News | September 26, 2011

Colombian musician, superstar, and philanthropist Shakira is well known for her love of soccer and will be performing live to officially open Olympiysky, the new four-billion-hryvnia (approximately $500 million) stadium in Kiev, Ukraine on Oct. 8.

“Kyiv (Kiev) arena will be opened by the same singer who was closing Johannesburg ceremony [at the World Football Championship in South Africa],” said Infrastructure Minister Borys Kolesnikov on Sept. 26.

Between writing the song “Waka-Waka” – which became the official anthem of the World Football Championship in South Africa in 2010 – and her high-profile soccer player boyfriend, Barcelona star Gerard Pique, the songstress certainly shows her love of the sport. Now, the star will be commemorating the opening of the newest soccer stadium, which will be the main arena to host next year’s Euro-2012 championship soccer matches.

Shakira’s performance will be followed later in the month by singer Anastacia, an American artist who has been highly received in Europe, and Bryan Adams on Oct. 28.
