Hautos: 1937 Mercedes-Benz 540K Roadster Estimated to be Most Expensive Ever Auctioned

It is of no doubt that Mercedes-Benz is responsible for creating some of the world’s most revered and coveted vehicles in automotive history, and that fact is only solidified by the coming auction of the iconic 1937 Mercedes-Benz 540K Spezial Roadster, which is set to go on sale this August with RM Auctions – and be the most expensive Mercedes-Benz ever sold at auction.

Lending to the existing exclusivity that comes with the marque, the classic and sleek roadster was built for the ultra-privileged, with only 406 of them ever produced, all between 1936 and 1939. While most no longer exist, this particular lot is said to be one of only three left today. A well-traveled vehicle, the car has an impressive history of past ownership, from Argentina, Germany, and Australia, to end up in the U.S., where Formula 1 legend Bernie Ecclestone bought it in 2007 for $8.25 million, and has taken the show field at both the prestigious Amelia Island and Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance events.

With an eight-cylinder, 180 horsepower engine, the magnificent model has been one of the most celebrated in automotive history. It boasts a four-speed manual transmission, four-wheel suspension, and a top speed of 105mph with a 0-100 kmph in 16.4 seconds acceleration rate. The stunning vehicle is estimated to rake in well over its last $8.25 sale price – possibly fetching a world record- setting price.
