Alonzo Mourning
Category: Power Couples
Company: Alonzo Mourning Charities
Industry: Philanthropy
What Made Him Haute: He announced his retirement from the NBA in 2009, and it was shortly thereafter that the Miami Heat, where he played the majority of his all-star career, proclaimed that No. 33 would be the first number retired at the American Airlines Arena. While no longer making moves on the court, he and his wife are still making a solid impact on Miami. He founded Alonzo Mourning Charities in 1997, which has since raised more than $7 million to benefit children and families, with a focus on youth enrichment centers, including the Overtown Youth Center. His wife Tracy is a mentor, designer, broadcast journalist, and motivational speaker. For the charity, she focuses on the Honey Shine Mentoring program for at-risk girls. The couple also operates Zo’s Fund for Life, which was born after Alonzo was diagnosed with a rare kidney disease during a routine pre-season physical.
What Makes Him Haute Now: Miami Heat fans are desperate to find out what Alonzo’s next move is; reports are speculating that the star basketball player might return after his career ending patella tendon tear in 2007. Zo was quoted as saying that, “this wasn’t the way he wanted to end his career considering all he had been through already.” Miami fans are happy to hear the good news. Although he is 40 years old, Alonzo has had a long break and appears to be in great shape.
Alonzo, along with his Alonzo Mourning Charities, will also host a golf charity this month at the Trump National Golf Club in New York for the seventh annual Zo’s Million Dollar Shootout. One lucky golfer will win $1 million.
On the other hand, Tracy Mourning continues her philanthropic efforts through her Honey Shine Mentoring Program. The program empowers young girls through their bi-weekly workshops and summer camps.
