Haute Summer Concerts in Phoenix
July 10: Kings of Leon
Maybe this is short notice for you, but we’d wager that if you’re already a Kings of Leon fan, you’ve probably had your tickets for weeks. Caleb Followill and his three brothers will perform their unique brand of “bro rock,” as the sound is sometimes described, while concert-goers sing along to hits from their most recent studio release, 2008’s Only by the Night. July 17: LeAnn Rimes
Whether you’re boycotting her due to the controversy surrounding her relationship with Eddie Cibrian or remain a lifelong fan, you’ve got to admit: the woman can sing. Her single “Swingin’,” a cover of the John Anderson original, was released June 14 and is the first from her upcoming album of country covers, tentatively titled Lady and Gentlemen, scheduled to drop later this year. July 25: Justin Bieber
Lately it feels like it’s Justin Bieber’s world and we’re all just living in it. This month, the teen pop sensation with the bowl cut and high-tops who’s been taking the universe by storm will touch down in Phoenix to sing hits from the album he released this past March, appropriately titled, My World 2.0. This may be the best chance you’ll ever get to score brownie points with your tween/teenage daughter who already knows all the words to “One Time,” “Baby” and “One Less Lonely Girl.” Jobing.com Arena
July 31: Lady Gaga
The Gaga and her little monsters will be turning downtown into, what else, a monster ball, when her tour swings through the Valley at the end of this month. Fans will be dancing their hearts out to “Poker Face,” “Just Dance,” “Alejandro,” “Paparazzi,” “Bad Romance,” and the rest of her arsenal of pop-tastic dance sensations. But let’s face it, we’re almost more interested in whatever new and shocking ensemble she’ll be wearing that night. US Airways Center
August 8: Toby Keith
Toby Keith loves this town. If you like going to the bar and grill named after this country crooner, then you’ll be as happy as a lark to see the real deal live and in concert during his American Ride Tour. Joined by Trace Adkins, Keith is sure to deliver fans a rompin’ good time, performing such crowd favorites as “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue,” “I Love This Bar,” and “How Do You Like Me Now?!” By the end of the night, you just might believe you “Should’ve Been a Cowboy.” Cricket Wireless Pavilion
August 17: Natalie Merchant
In April, the legendary Ms. Merchant released her fifth studio album, entitled Leave Your Sleep. The lyrics to all the tracks have been taken from American and British poems centered on childhood, and fill not one, but two discs. Her tour to promote the album kicks off next week and runs through September. Don’t miss the opportunity to be part of the famed folk singer’s first studio album in seven years. Dodge Theatre
August 18: John Mayer
Oh John Mayer, what are we going to do with you? The “sensitive” playboy of the blues-rock world may have been seemingly sabotaging his own career these days – for example, he admitted to Rolling Stone that he doesn’t believe his most recent album, 2009’s Battle Studies, was his best (he prefers 2006’s Continuum) – but we have a feeling his entire tour will sell out anyway. August 28: Goo Goo Dolls
Bringing Switchfoot to Phoenix with them, the Dolls are out to prove they’re still going strong. After the band reportedly felt their latest album, the 12-track Something For the Rest of Us, just wasn’t quite up to snuff, the release date was pushed from February 2010 to August 31, 2010. At any rate, the record’s first single, called “Home,” went public last month and we can’t wait to hear the rest of the tracks. Dodge Theatre
August 30: Green Day
Back with another “rock opera,” the guyliner-wearing Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tre Cool will be performing 2009’s 21st Century Breakdown, a 70-minute album that fans adore for its many anti-authority and anti-establishment themes. Plus, it’s already got two main characters, three acts, and the anthem “21 Guns,” which won multiple awards at the 2009 MTV Music Awards. Will 21st Century Breakdown be turned into a musical just like American Idiot was? Cricket Wireless Pavilion
September 1: David Gray and Ray LaMontagne
You’d better make plans early to take advantage of this twofer. David Gray and Ray LaMontagne both have upcoming albums that are scheduled to be released this August. Gray’s, titled Foundling, will include two discs’ worth of the English singer and songwriter’s signature Brit-folk sound, while the American LaMontagne and his band, the Pariah Dogs, offer the God Willin’ & the Creek Don’t Rise, anchored by its first single, “Beg Steal or Borrow.” Dodge Theatre
