He is passionate about providing the highest possible surgical outcomes for his patients and is committed to the American Academy of Ophthalmology's mission of protecting sight and empowering lives. His research and clinical interests focus on the latest innovative laser and lens technology to perfect patient outcomes.
Dr. Parra graduated at the top of his class from the prestigious Baylor College of Medicine, one of the top medical schools in the US and world-renowned for its NIH-funded research in vision and ophthalmology. While there, he served as President and Chair of the Ophthalmology Interest Group and founded the Unite for Sight BCM chapter — both focused on advancing ophthalmic surgery — and under his leadership the Unite for Sight chapter was named Global Health Society of the Year. He completed his ophthalmology residency at the UCLA Jules Stein Eye Institute, where he was elected Chief Resident in recognition of his surgical excellence, and has taught numerous refractive and cataract procedures to his peers. His honors include the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery Excellence Award.
Dr. Parra's career is defined by bringing leading-edge, evidence-based surgical innovation into his work with patients. He was one of the first surgeons in the US to perform lens and cataract surgery with the Light Adjustable Lens, an innovative technology that allows vision to be customized after lens replacement and cataract surgery, and one of the first to perform surgery using a novel minimally invasive approach to treat ocular conditions. His work has been published in numerous professional journals, and he has been invited to lecture extensively in the US and abroad, presenting at meetings including the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. He has also served on faculty at the University of Houston College of Medicine and Optometry, training new generations of eye care experts.
From Pacific Vision Institute in San Francisco, Dr. Parra has performed thousands of vision correction surgeries for patients from all walks of life — including professional athletes, artists, entrepreneurs, professors, fellow physicians and nurses, and patients traveling from abroad. He performs refractive surgery with the most advanced lasers, lenses, and techniques, including LASIK, PRK, and EVO ICL, and is recognized for lens replacement and cataract surgery using advanced lens technologies such as the Light Adjustable Lens and multifocal, EDOF, and toric lenses. Beyond his technical standards and meticulous attention to detail, Dr. Parra is approachable and a great listener who personally examines and spends time with each patient to help determine their best option.
