As the service of the U.S. government that is responsible for collecting federal taxes, a notification from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) usually signifies a major headache. From an official letter in the mail to a high-profile visit from an agent at your doorstep, an IRS issue can be complex and difficult to manage.

Senen Garcia, ESQ, Founder and Managing Attorney of SG Law Group, is here to assuage the fears surrounding an IRS confrontation. Having started as an owner of a tax office, Mr. Garcia is well-versed in advising in the area of accounting. He knows firsthand the burden individuals can feel when dealing with tax issues and the fear that can happen when they don’t know what next steps to take.

As the Haute Lawyer expert in the tax resolution field, Mr. Garcia gives his top three tips to remember when dealing with the IRS.

Don’t Avoid Issues with the IRS

“If you receive communication from the IRS, don’t ignore it. Most people will never see an IRS agent show up at their door; most of the time the IRS will contact you via letter. If this does happen, do not throw it away! The most important thing is to not ignore it but to see what exactly is going on.”

The IRS is Not Out to Get You

“The IRS is not the big, bad wolf! Almost all of the time the IRS will want to work with you to see if you can pay in installments. Even if you’re in a situation where you can’t pay or you’re not deemed trustworthy, they will still be willing to work with you, especially if you are experiencing financial hardship.”

Don’t Do It Alone

“Most importantly, don’t do it alone. There are professionals, such as myself, who work in this field and have more options and resources available to us. As an attorney, I am familiar with and knowledgeable about the IRS and can be there with you so you don’t go at it alone.”
