Fans React to Miley Cyrus’ Legal Challenges Over “Flowers” Lawsuit

Fans are weighing in on the legal troubles facing pop star Miley Cyrus, who is being sued by Tempo Music Investments. The lawsuit, reported on September 16, claims that Cyrus’ 2023 hit single “Flowers” copies the harmony, melody, and chorus of Bruno Mars’s 2013 hit “When I Was Your Man.”

Social media erupted with mixed reactions, as many supporters came to Cyrus’ defense. Critics of the lawsuit argue that it seems to be a money grab, pointing out that Mars has previously congratulated Cyrus on the success of “Flowers” and has not pursued any legal action against her.

One user on X (formerly Twitter) commented, “Bruno Mars congratulated her on the success of the song and sent her flowers… why is she being sued?” accompanied by a crying emoji.

Another added, “Tempo Music’s rent must be due because Miley literally doesn’t bother anyone.”

A fan account tweeted, “Bruno himself understood there was no basis for a lawsuit and even used ‘Flowers’ in ads to promote his brand. Just money-hungry people.”

In a January 2023 article, Billboard examined why Cyrus’ song does not infringe on Mars’s work, arguing that there are no direct samples or significant similarities in melody or production. “Merely using some of the same words as an older song is not considered grounds for infringement,” the article stated.

However, some individuals believe that Tempo Music Investments may have a strong case. One commenter remarked, “Well yeah… it’s partly their song lol. If she didn’t get their permission, then this is an easy win for them. Even more embarrassing when it’s her only Grammy.”

Cyrus won her first Grammy Award earlier this year for “Flowers,” which took home the honor for Best Pop Solo Performance.
