Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida recently enacted legislation prohibiting individuals experiencing homelessness from sleeping in public areas, including streets, sidewalks, and parks. DeSantis characterized the law as a measure to maintain law and order while providing resources to assist unhoused individuals.

However, critics argue that the law fails to address the root causes of homelessness and lacks long-term solutions. Under the new law, individuals are prohibited from camping in public spaces with tents or temporary shelters. Local authorities are responsible for enforcing the law, with oversight from the state.

The legislation also allows counties to establish temporary campsites for up to one year, providing resources for substance abuse and mental health treatment, as well as basic amenities like restrooms and running water. While proponents believe this will connect homeless individuals with necessary services, opponents raise concerns about practical implementation, potential legal implications for localities, and inadequate support for those with substance abuse issues or disabilities. The law’s passage has sparked debate among lawmakers, advocates, and impacted communities, highlighting the complexity of addressing homelessness in Florida.
