Mr. Robinson recently took the time to speak with Haute Media Group co-founder Seth Semilof. The two discussed Mr. Robinson’s experience in opening his own firm, among other topics.
Seth Semilof: Is operating your own firm what you expected? What’s the greatest lesson you’ve learned since opening your firm in 2014?
Chad Robinson: I think the greatest lesson I’ve learned is that you can be a great lawyer, a very bad business owner. It’s very hard to do both, and you have to learn to excel on the both sides of the business. Additionally, I’ve come to realize that I work so much moron this side, in my own firm, than I ever did working for insurance companies.
I think so many folks think that us on the plaintiff side just sit back and relax due to not having billable and what not. But the truth is, it’s just so much work. Perhaps I’ve done this to myself, but for better or for worse, it’s non-stop work days.
SS: In your transition from excelling in school, to opening your own practice, how do you go from learning to be the best lawyer, to striving to become the best business owner?
CR: I can say that I have worked for a lot of great lawyers, but not a lot of great bosses, and there’s a difference. I have also worked under great bosses who simply weren’t as proficient as lawyers. I feel very fortunate to have been exposed to these different personality traits. It allowed me to observe and take note of attributes I really admired and flaws which I wasn’t so fond of, and apply it to my own role as a leader of my firm.
