Filler and Toxin Fatigue – Myth or Fact?

News May 28, 2024 By Grace Sarkisian

The concept of “filler fatigue” has become increasingly mainstream, with more patients who have used dermal fillers for many years noticing that they need more product to achieve the same results. This phenomenon, known to many practitioners and industry insiders, suggests that repeated treatments often require increased product volume, oftentimes without ever achieving the original look. While other factors such as age, gravity, filler placement, and lifestyle play a role, the best analogy to describe this effect is an inflated balloon. Allow us to explain:

The first time a balloon is inflated to its maximum capacity, the latex stretches and fills with volume. However, repeated inflations require more helium each time to achieve the same size and fullness. Understanding this can help patients realize that it’s not just their imagination or an upsell tactic from their injector when more product is recommended with each subsequent treatment.

Similarly, a lesser-known but comparable effect occurs with the use of neurotoxins. Although rare, some patients may develop immunity to neurotoxins over time, diminishing their effectiveness even if the same units are used. If your neurotoxins aren’t working as well as before, consider trying different brands. Each manufacturer’s product is slightly different, and switching may yield better results. Current botulinum toxin type A-brands on the market include Botox Cosmetic, Dysport, Xeomin, Jeuveau, and the newest addition, Daxxify.

At DermaGym, we believe that the best approach to aging is to combine different procedures for optimal results. Having decades of firsthand experience, we would agree with many experts on the importance of switching products and procedures. Instead of relying solely on fillers and toxins, one should try other non-surgical modalities such as radiofrequency and fractional heating. These alternatives are excellent for skin tightening, wrinkle reduction, and increasing collagen production, similar to what fillers and toxins provide.

We strive to be trusted leaders in this industry by practicing what we preach. We treat all of our clients like the VIPs that they are and pride ourselves on being honest, well-informed advisors. If you are looking to explore new modalities and would like to move beyond traditional fillers and toxins, let’s talk. We have carefully curated our offerings, setting ourselves apart from typical carbon copy medspas whose menus all look the same.
