Stretch marks, ugh. The aesthetic no one wants, but most have. These narrow bands (stretch marks) that can develop on the surface of your skin are a common result of pregnancy, weight loss, and weight gain, amongst other possible causes. In the case that your stretch marks are bothering you, enough to get them lightened, there are methods both in-office and at home that are capable of providing you ideal results. To learn more about the treatments, Haute Beauty sat down with the experts. Here’s what they shared:

Stretch marks are the most common aesthetic pathology of the body. They look like scars or wavy lines that form when skin rapidly extends or contracts. Like any other scar, stretch marks are permanent, and there is no secret cure-all ingredient, but there are many treatments that can make them less noticeable, such as microneedling or collagen induction therapy. Microneedling uses tiny micro-needles to create small punctures on the top layer of the skin. The wounds traumatize the skin and trigger the body’s natural response to create more collagen and elastin to heal the wounds. Other options for stretch marks both professionally and at home include:

  • Stretch Marks Camouflage, or should we say ‘fake it till you make it,’ is a technique that is similar to a tattoo. Using skin tone inks allows for the scars to be the same color as the surrounding skin tone.
  • Microdermabrasion exfoliates and heals damaged skin, which improves the texture of your skin.
  • Radiofrequency treatments (RF) use energy to heat the deep layer of your skin. This heat stimulates the production of collagen to help to improve saggy skin and wrinkles.
  • Professional Chemical Peels provide a deep exfoliation of the skin and promote collagen.
  • At-home treatments: Vitamin A, Hyaluronic Acid, Centella, Aloe Vera, and good ole Coconut Oil.

Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a powerful rejuvenating procedure. During a session of microneedling, tiny needles puncture the skin to form micro-channels; this in turn triggers a trauma response in the body by creating new collagen and elastin to heal the area. This production of new collagen and elastin to the area helps repair the damaged connective tissue that produces the stretch mark. By using microneedling to stimulate the production of collagen and elastin, we can improve the texture, color, and overall appearance of stretch marks. Other options for stretch marks both professionally and at home include:

  • Any treatment that stimulates collagen has the potential to heal stretch marks. Some anti-aging lasers, radio frequency, and red LED lights have been known to improve the appearance of the skin.
  • At-home treatments: Retinoid cream is vital as it helps rebuild collagen in the skin. Also, hydrating ingredients such as hyaluronic acid will help to keep the skin hydrated to prevent future stretch marks.
