Pimples are out of style. Though they are unavoidable, we skin fanatics will continue to do everything in our power to rid ourselves of whiteheads rising to the surface or stubborn blackheads forming in the crevis of our noses. So what do we do? We take to the internet hoping that a new pimple-free formula has been found. Entrenched in the tips and tricks available, we are soon to find ourselves running to the nearest convenience store to buy pimple patches and sheet masks.

Understanding of the many trends that flow through social media, we at Haute Beauty took on the task of getting the final stamp of approval for these haute products. Here’s what our Haute Beauty experts shared:

Dr. Ellen Burov | Skin | Manhattan, NY

For pimple patches, my recommendation is Neutrogena Stubborn Acne Ultra thin blemish patches. It’s a hydrocolloid dressing that doesn’t irritate sensitive skin. It might help as a spot treatment. However, it doesn’t replace medicated options. For OTC masks for hydration, you can use Hyaluronic collagen sheet masks. They are very inexpensive and easy to use. Allergic reactions to these masks are not as common and they are pretty safe.

I actually like recommending pimple patches for 2 reasons. First, they create occlusion, which allows for the penetration of the product to be faster and at a higher rate. Most importantly, pimple patches isolate the pimple, protecting it from being picked at by the patient (using fingernails can create an infection). Second, they actually work since they have hydrocolloid material, which decreases inflammation and helps with wound healing. My favorite ones are the Neutrogena Stubborn Acne ones and the ZitSticka ones.

Inflammatory facial skin disorders such as acne can be treated with simple patches or masks. Pimple patches are small, simple hydrocolloid patches that can be applied overnight to help decrease the pimple size and surrounding erythema. They are not recommended for blackheads or whiteheads as well as deeper lesions. They should be applied for no longer than a 12 hours period.

Some facial inflammatory disorders can be treated using over-the-counter facial masks. There are many different varieties based on their composition. Some contain clay-based materials to help provide a deep cleaning, or they may contain vitamin C-based materials for a more brightening complexion. It is best to visit with a local skin expert to choose the best facial mask that fits your specific condition. Some good examples include Cetaphil’s Pro DermaControl Purifying Clay Mask or L’Oreal’s Pure Clay Mask with Charcoal.

Most pimple patches can be used. Typically these are hydrocolloid small dressings which means they will absorb the fluid and sebum of a nasty zit. Many pimpled patches also deliver acne-fighting molecules like salicylic acid to help resolve the pimple and soothe inflammation.

Drug store face masks are popular and come as many types: clay, cream, gel, and exfoliating. Depending on your skin type and issue you can pick ones that are more geared towards hydrating the skin, drying out oily areas, or ones that help fight acne. My winter favorite one to use is the Neutrogena Hydro Boost Hydrating 100% Hydrogel Mask!

Pimple patches have made quite the debut over the past few years. So much so that multiple brands are on the shelves as we speak! Like all skincare, pimple patches are not created equal. So here are a few things to look out for and tips for using pimple patches. Look for a pimple patch brand that contains salicylic acid, hydrocolloid and retinol. Some of my favorite pimple patch brands are Neutrogena Stubborn Acne Blemish Patches, Mighty Patch, and Peace Out Acne Patches

Another great way to soothe the skin, hydrate, and bring some life back to your skin is using a face mask weekly. Face masks don’t have to break your bank though! There are several over-the-counter and online that can get the job done and then some! These methods beat putting toothpaste on breakouts!
