If You Are Experiencing These Symptoms You May Have A Damaged Skin Barrier

Your skin barrier is your body’s first line of defense or “protective shield”. Think about it this way, it blocks entry to most topical drugs or those you put on your skin. The skin barrier regulates water loss, retains moisture, and keeps you hydrated and looking refreshed. When this barrier becomes damaged, it can lead to various skin issues and discomfort.

One common sign of a damaged skin barrier is consistent redness. If you’ve noticed your skin turning red easily or experiencing increased sensitivity, it could be an indication of barrier impairment. Additionally, you might feel a stinging or burning sensation when applying skincare products, and your skin may feel tight and exhibit flaking or peeling.

To repair your skin barrier and restore its optimal function, it’s crucial to make some adjustments to your skincare routine. First and foremost, consider reducing the use of active ingredients like AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids) and BHAs (beta hydroxy acids). While these ingredients offer exfoliating benefits, they can also be harsh on a compromised barrier. Decreasing their frequency or temporarily avoiding them can allow your skin to recover.

Similarly, if you use retinol, a potent ingredient known for its anti-aging properties, you might need to decrease its usage or spread out its application. Retinol can potentially exacerbate barrier damage, so a cautious approach is advised.

When it comes to repairing your skin barrier, incorporating hydrating and emollient-rich products into your routine can be beneficial. Look for hydra balms and emollients that provide intense moisture and help to strengthen and nourish your skin barrier.

A couple of my favorite products for barrier repair are the ÂN-BALM Radiant Hydra-Balm and the Zo Skin Health Hydrating Creme. These products have proven to be effective in nourishing and restoring the skin barrier.

By understanding the importance of a healthy skin barrier and taking proactive steps to repair and protect it, you can achieve a radiant complexion and enjoy the benefits of a resilient and balanced skin barrier.
